Visiting Skyhawks

Prospective members are encouraged to come and visit the club. Weather permitting, the field is busy on most weekends and our friendly members will be more than happy to show you around. Prospective members can also reach out to the Secretary to arrange a visit, or a “come and try” session with one of our instructors.

Joining Up

Joining Skyhawks is easy, download an application form or grab one from the club. Contact a committee member so we can best cater for your needs then pay the fee. Members serve a 12 month probation period before becoming full members. Probationary members are unable to vote on resolutions which are proposed at club meetings, but are otherwise able to enjoy all of the priveleges of being a Skyhawks member.

Fees are all inclusive, and include liability insurance from the MAAA.

New members are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Club’s Constitution and By-Laws, although key points will be explained as part of your introduction to the Club.

Solo Accreditation

Solo accreditation is an important part of the membership journey. Before being permitted to fly solo at the field, members must demonstrate to one of our club’s instructors that they can safely operate their chosen type of model (fixed wing or rotary). Prior to receiving their solo accreditation, members will only be permitted to fly under the supervision of an instructor. Solo accreditation is also required before being provided with a key to access the field and the club rooms.

Solo accreditations are issued across a number of different categories: Glider, Fixed Wing, Helicopter and Multirotor.

Solo accreditation requires you to demonstrate to an instructor that you can safely and consistently perform the following:

  • Observation of relevant flying rules;
  • Taking off;
  • Flying circuits in either direction; and
  • Landing without damaging your model.

Training and instruction is available to assist new members in preparing for their solo accreditation.

Please note that Skyhawks does not require members to be assessed for bronze wings before being permitted to fly solo.
